White House Gender Policy Council Will Neglect Boys and Men’s Issues

The Biden-Harris Transition team announced on January 19 the formation of a White House Gender Policy Council (PDF of the press release). The Gender Policy Council has two co-chairs: Jennifer Klein and Julissa Reynoso.

The announcement from President-elect Biden conveys a belief that gender-related policy discussions need only focus on supporting girls and women, rather than the broader principle of removing gender as a factor that impedes human flourishing for individuals of any gender. The White House Gender Policy Council will be an unfortunate example of gender bias and blindness to problems in which boys and men are most impacted. Fathers, sons, black men, white men, straight men, gay men, trans men – all will be left out.

Sean Kullman, president of Global Initiative for Boys and Men, said the following in response to the announcement about the White House Gender Policy Council:

Boys and men continue to lead the nation as victims of COVID deaths, suicide deaths, homelessness, violent crime deaths, violent crime victimization, opioid deaths, gun deaths, incarcerations, and a number of other health and mental health issues. They are behind in education on all levels. We can no longer ignore our boys and men…
